At the Bank

When I went to the bank today in my 1980 Spirit I
parked beside an AMC Eagle. This was the first time I
had seen two AMCs together any time other than a car
club meeting or in my back yard, since I moved to
Salinas.

An update on my Spirit. It is running better than
ever. It has the Iron Duke with auto tranny and the
engine was rebuilt about two years ago. Ever since,
the rebuild the idle has been a little choppy and the
heater valve did not work. Since it had a new heater
valve, I figured the problem was in the vacuum hose
routing and I finally decided to trace it out. I
changed the vacuum source which powers the heater
system to a vacuum manifold below the carburetor.
It's former location turned out to be a ported vacuum
source on the carb. The heater works now and the idle
is dead smooth. Also the persistent vibration problem
I had between 55 and 65 mph has essentially
disappeared. I suspect that the former vacuum hose
routing caused an unusual mixture condition at that
speed. I just don't know. The car does have the E2SE
Varijet carb with electronic feedback for CA
emissions.

Ironically, the little Spirit is for sale.
