Bill, I just finished a 401 for a guy in Racine with a solid roller cam and Edlebrock heads. He brought me a set of the shorty headers to check the fit and see what I thought for his engine so I got a chance to look them over fairly well. For an engine like a 401 with increased hp, (his was about the 550 range) my opinion is, they are not the right part. The tubes were far too small with areas that were flattened reducing the tube size even further. Where they came together at the collector, all 4 outer corners were shrouded by the lip of the reducer. The dog leg was marginal and I had a little concern over the flange area for sealing purposes. These would be fine for the smaller engines and maybe a stock 401. Do they really flow better than the stock manifolds? I'm thinking about getting a set, but would like to know if it's going to be worth the money. I've always used full-length, but on my latest project, I want to give these a try - mainly because of clearance issues, not cooking my starter, and ease of installation/connection to existing exhaust. Will it just look nicer and not have any better performance? I'm thinking of these for a Matador Coupe with a 401 engine. The engine is not stock, but is close. Air Gap intake, Edelbrock 750 carb, Comp Cams XE262H cam and kit, otherwise stock but freshened up very recently.

Thanks

?

Bill Dettman

'74 Matador X 401, '70 Javelin BBG
