After some research, I found a photo of the first Indy car in an AMC ad for 1967: http://www.amccf.com/mainokset/67Rambler_Six_at_Indy_ad_MT_sept67.jpg This car clearly shows the SINGLE turbo and CARBURETOR used for the 550 hp engine. As the ad states, the carb and turbo combo just didn't work out right. They weren't running straight gasoline, but either nitro-methane or some exotic blend of fuel -- haven't researched that deep yet. But I read elsewhere (can't find it now!) that there were carb icing problems -- which is common when running ethanol blends at high flow rates. Note how the turbo is mounted in the airstream to keep it cool. V-8 Indy cars had the turbo mounted up and over as well, but further toward the back where the right bank could cross over the back of the engine into the turbo. There was an old Paul Newman movie on AMC last night (Thursday) about an Indy car driver circa 1968. Wonderful pics of some of the cars!! They looked just like the one in the ad except there was no tall fairing behind the headrest (for the six valve cover) and the turbo was mounted closer to the back. Fuel injection solved the icing problems, and twin turbos got power up enough to be competitive. ============================================================= Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist
