Jim, I have a 2500 Dodge standard cab 4 wheel drive diesel powered PU truck. I bought this vehicle to plow snow and to tow cars around the country. The vehicle has plenty of power and performs these tasks with ease. The vehicle has the Cummings diesel with 410 posi rear axle configuration I get ~20 miles per gallon around town and almost 15 one the highway while towing. I am very happy that I bought the diesel as most of the 40,000+ miles I have put on the truck have been towing a trailer with a car loaded aboard. If I had purchased a gas version, similar to the one my neighbor bought, I would be getting ~8 miles per gallon towing. My neighbor also bought his truck to tow cars and I spoke with him about gas mileage prior to buying the diesel. It cost an additional 5K to buy the diesel rather than gas, but I think I have already saved a few bucks. I'm thinking a stripper reg cab 2WD diesel/6 sp manual trans/3.73 gears. Figure that's plenty for the 4000 lbs or so that a loaded car trailer would be. I want something that has capacity to spare so it isn't staining when going down the road, can handle hills OK, etc... I hear the diesel PU's get 20+ MPG. The only person I know around here first of is full of BS, and second has a crew cab, lifted, 4WD with auto that I think is getting some 18-20 mpg if I can filter thru his crap correctly. I know other people "that knows someone" that only gets 14mpg. The combo I stated above should do better than that by a decent margin.
