starting in '67 the whole switch is a common saginaw part used on many
many gm cars for many years.

Not exactly true. There were three different turn signal switches used on 67 and 68 Americans (excluding right hand drive models). The one for column shift automatics is not a common GM part and when the cam breaks, you have to replace the entire switch (the cam has wires going to it and there are electrical contacts in it). I think I've seen new switches for sale at either http://www.ramblerparts.com or http://www.americanpartsdepot.com.
