Subject: Stroker questions To: mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx Thanks everyone. I will definately recheck the strokers site. I did that once before the itch took hold and I committed myself. My '65 440 is complete except for a modern engine-tranny so it's time to treat her to a transplant. This engine rebuild will be slow as the 232/AT is still running so sweet and I have so many other things to do. I have this 87 block, traded a set of heads for it, so I will stay with that one. I don't want the serpetine belt and I plan to stay with carbs, I am building a tri-carb manifold for it, plus points so this will be try and fit deal. But I have time and lots of parts. What tranny is sweet for the strokers. I have a nice 904 but no flex plate, can I use the 258 plate. I'm gonna stay with an AT as this is my driver and I get lazy sometimes.....Russ -------------------------- Don't think I'm not listening to you, I am, and know what you are saying is 'Lo buk' run what 'cha Brung. IF that '87 4.0 was in *Nice* condition, I'd say get the later EFi system with manifold / harness / 4sp. Auto Trans & go for it. Here is what I've found chasing these combinations around > from others who chased these around as well, many times having spent only to find it 'Isn't' anywhere what they wanted nor performed anywhere to what you truly expected. Since you have Time, I say take it all in before you get 'firm' on what will deliver. 1/. Tri-Power Carbed Manifold. There is a builder on-line, and if I can find this again I'll let you know. I just offloaded all my files to a remote server to be burned onto CD - my machine is 'clean' but bereft of Info. I was ready for a Tri-Power EFi system to 'Blind' show goers with ........ however. He built Two Carbed, Three Carbed manifolds for his Stroker. Three carbed tanked - made less daily driver power than the stock BBD on a 258. Two carbed looked nice as do the Twin H Power Hudsons but failed in making anything but Upper RPM power. He runs a 4bbl. This guy races too, so I don't dismiss his efforts nor the findings on Daily Drivers. 2/. The '96+ year 4.0 engines have more than stronger blocks & main girdles & better balanced cranks. They also have vastly Improved Cylinder Heads and Intake Ports - that go with the EFi systems. MoPar spent $$ on the Development. The EFi coupled with an Aisin 2wd 4 speed automatic ( run by a computer along with the EFi) STOCK > will put any 258 / 4.0 stroker carbed behind any TF 727 or 999 in the weeds in daily operation enjoyment and performance. That 727 takes a sit down 35HP to spin. Toyota has a 2wd version of the A4W that came behind the Supra and if you ever rode with this trans. > you would love it. This bolts onto the A4W bellhousing as these are bell & trans. systems. My suggestion Russ, is this: Find a Low Mileage '96+ 4.0 motor from a wreck & get the Engine complete > Harnesses > Computer > Flexptale / Convertor / Bellhousing. Ask them to just unbolt the A4W trans > remove it & put the bolts back into the Bellhousing. You are now Light Years ahead in True Enjoyabilities >and have spent not nearly what you will reconstructing a beat '87 4.0 with clogged Oil Galleries........... Get the 2wd Toyota Supra version of the A4W. Check prices on www.car-parts.com for one. You will find that some deliver free, and the prices vary considerably from Page 1 to Page 'X' > so look at ALL those prices. I'd just buy the complete deal > Install the package & enjoy. IF you feel the need to build a Stroker from this Newer Engine, by all means Read> Enjoy ! A Tri-Power carbed budget Stroker will give you what a basic AMC 258 would put out with an Inefficient Tri-Power set-up. The GTO guys don't run Tri-Power unless it is a Restoration Car for Shows > they didn't run well in their day > ended up on shelves as junk & now command unreal prices > Nostalgia Only. The Strokers guys have piles of parts, similar to yours in content....... there is a reason for the similarities. Right now, you will spend beyond what a complete '96 or newer drivetrain costs, on parts and machine shop bills, building the Current Concept. ..... and not have a complete up and running ''96+ Drivetrain with Fuel Injection, snappy performance, fuel economy, and a 4 speed Automatic for your Lazier moods..........
