Brien does bring up good points. But remember, just because there aren't a lot of replies does not mean that there aren't people "listening". A lot of people come here for info and just don't chime in. But they save info, especially links, for parts they may need in the future or even now. I tend to agree -- duplication of parts does seem a bit of overkill when there are lots of parts that aren't available, but it doesn't hurt to have more than one source. Most of the parts being made in duplicate are the ones that are easier to get made, mostly because they are modifications of something already out there. Most companies making AMC parts are either selling something that you have to modify slightly, or modify your AMC part (like guide plates -- most need the rocker pedestals machined for fit, and some rocker arms require drilling an tapping for a larger stud). In those cases there is no manufacturing cost involved, just the research to figure out how to make it fit. In cases where the manufacturer does modify an existing part there is still low manufacturing costs. Those are the parts we're mostly finding now -- just a little change in machining and it becomes an AMC parts instead of "brand x". The unavailable parts are mostly those that need AMC specific cas! tings and big investments -- like the Crown timing cover. They even had a bad batch that cost them dearly -- in production/parts cost and reputation/reliability. People even now question the Crown covers. Since they made the mistake of not destroying the bad batch soon enough and some went back into distribution they have to be checked for trueness. To bad there isn't a simple check to make sure the distributor hole is aligned correctly!
