Re: 1970 390 Machine Parts

A: I wonder how different it would be from the '73 Jeep with 4 speed
steering column I have? No shifter on it and it's black. (of course the horn
button says Jeep)

Okay, I'll bite -- what's so special about a Machine steering column? It's a
Saginaw column without a shifter. Any 67-78 Matador column for a floor
shifter should be nearly identical and a direct bolt in. Matador Coupe
column can be modified to work. I know the "foot" will need to be changed.
The mount location under the dash SHOULD be the same but the mount will be
different. I would think the mount from the sedan shifter column would bolt
to the Coupe non-shift column, but you'd have to try it. It's possible that
the mounting nuts are in different locations. The nust are just square nuts
tack welded to the coulumn casing, so it wouldn't be hard to tack weld new
ones on. In a pinch you could modify a 70s Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, or full
size GM column to fit just as easily as a full size AMC. What's with you
guys, always looking for an easy bolt in job!! Where's the challenge in
that? ;>

If you're looking for a Machine column to replace a bad one I somewhat
understand. If you're making a clone go ahead and modify a GM column to fit.
Won't matter unless you're trying to pass it off as an original machine, and

then you need a good horse whipping.
