Re: aux vacuum pump

A: Both the '88 E350 and '91 E350 my buddy has run a vacuum pump with the
7.3L IH diesel.

I've also seen factory-installed belt-driven vacuum pumps on circa 81-84
fullsize GM cars. I can remember an 82 Buick LeSabre with the Olds 307 that
had one, and I've seen them on Cadillacs as well, I think. With the absurd
amount of vacuum-operated anti-smog crap on these things, they needed all
the vacuum they could produce (and more!).

RE: 80s cars w/vac pumps -- look at any and all small diesels w/power brakes
(tink Volvo, Isuzu, VW) and 2.0L powered GMs w/ power brakes. Seems the
little OHC 2.0 (late 80s/early 90s) didn't produce enough vacuum for power
brakes at low speeds and some have vac pumps. I know my Chevette diesel from
years back (84 model) had an Isuzu diesel and the vac pump was mounted on
the back of the alternator. Not sure where the 2.0L pumps would be. The
bigger GM vehicles w/deisel used a Hydro Boost power brake system that uses

the power steering pump for boost.
