" From: farna@xxxxxxx " " Yes, it looks like the American auto industry is going the way of the " British auto industry in the 60s and 70s. Drying up due to competition " they either can't or won't keep up with, and coporate glut.
it's happening elsewhere too. fiat's only response to foreign competition is 'buy italian'.
My favorite transmission place ever, B & E Transmission in San Francisco, ordered pens that had their name, address etc, and the phrase "Buy American" on them. They were upset that they also said "Made in Germany".
Americans used to picture themselves "in the future!" -- colonies on the moon, flying cars, food pills... I never see pop images of America in the future, everyone's worried about preserving the present and revering the past. It doesn't matter if some of it was/is silly; it was fun and optimistic.
I choose to ignore the irony of writing this in a mailing list for old American cars.
The thing is, the kids in LA (and probably elsewhere) don't have this problem, software-driven import cars, computers, turbo tech, plastics, LEDs, it's all great. They're having fun with what a lot of us grumble about, and are doing the great American thing.
