I'd propose that #3 should be "everyone should drive a beater for as long
as it holds together" but move that to #1. My first car was a 73 Pontiac
Catalina 4 door with almost 200,000 miles on it (it was big, green, and got
really crappy mileage). I had that car for about 7 or 8 months and it took
almost everything I could throw at it. As it turns out, the head gaskets
just couldn't take sustained speeds in excess of 100 mph for more than a
half hour. I was about 50 miles from home when the gasket blew but it got
me home. I have a lot of fond memories of the antics I pulled in it.

I'll keep the philosophic meanderings to a minimum but there are a couple

1. Everyone should have to be poor at some time in their life.
2. Everyone should have to be a waiter (waitress ) at some time in their
life.
3. Everyone should have to drive a Volkswagen Beetle for at least a year.
( a Chevette makes a decent substitute and a Pacer may as well)
Humbling experiences to be sure.
