RE: 304/290/200R4 er nope how about SR4

" From: "Armand Eshleman" <aje1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
"
" The best bet is actually the SR4 transmission 3.5:1 first and 1:1 top
" gear. Doesn't Armand just post that he had a 304 with SR4?
"
" Peter Marano
" Kenosha WI
"
" That would be correct Peter. I have a SR4 from a 1979 Spirit AMX.
" I also have the engine, but it is disassembled, although it is rebuildable
" with machine work, and new parts. The SR4 four speed needs a rebuild
" kit also. It could use new bearings synchros and seals/gaskets, but it is
" complete with shifter. Remember you fellas have been talking automatics
" with overdrive and lock up converters. The SR4 is a manual gearbox,
" for those of you not aware of this. This gearbox is very light (weight
" wise),
" and can handle a stock 290/304. I'm not sure how long it would last behind a
" built 290/304 or a larger displacement engine.

i don't think it's really up to a stock v8 either; it's only rated
something like 220 ft-lbs. nobody but amc used them behind v8s; ford
only teamed them with fours.
