you want standard shift wiht the 2.0. If you want an automatic and live in a flat area look for an 82-83 Concord with a 258. My mothers new 83 Concord 258 auto and 2:21 rear axle got 28+ MPG highway driving thrgouh the flat lands of Ohio in 84. And I was 22 and we ran it 70+ MPH in a 55 MPH speed limit era. Fummy thing was we were following a freind in a Pinto and they got 29! We had a much nicer ride! If you live in the mountains forget the 2:21 axle it sucks. My dad pulled it out that fall as in town mileage and performance sucked in the hills. He swaped in a 2:79ish gear and intown mileage picked up. My mom never took it out of town anyway. You shouldn't expect the mileage of the Nissan, which should be approaching 30 mpg on the highway (mid to low 20s around town). You might do as good as 25-26 on the highway, 19-20 around town. Could be a little better, but the 2.0L is really working in a Gremlin with auto trans! Rear axle is 3.55 or so (I know a Concord used a 3.58, lowest stock gear I've seen in an AMC!). If it's got a/c it will be 2-3 mpg less with that on. If you don't have any long distance cruising it should be okay. One thing you need to do right away is install a Pertronix ignition module. The only people I've tlaked to who have had a 2.0L long term (in a 79 Spirit, with four speed) said they noticed a small increase in power and economy iwth the Pertronix. Now I don't know how good the original points were before the Pertronix was installed, but the engine has just adequate power for a car that weight, so a 2-3 hp difference is noticed! Unless you happen to have a junkyard with! ! > a Porsche 944 in it waiting to have the EFI and electronic system yanked off... On that note, a GM 2.5L TBI system would work well on it. The 2.0L uses a two stage Weber carb though, so TBI probably won't improve much more than 3-4 hp and 1-2 mpg. Might not be worth the hassle (but I would for a driver, if the parts can be picked up cheap, like in a local pick-n-pull), but the Pertronix certainly is since it's a half hour job (at the most) and just drops in! > >On April 26, 2005 Ken Ames wrote: > >> What sort of gas mileage could one expect from this car? >> There's one for sale locally.
