Re: Pulling a tranny from a '62 Classic

This isn't very hard Justin! The thing is you won't be able to move the car with the trans out, so you have to put it where you can get under it but it can stay a while.
Drain the trans fluid before doing anything else!

1) Take the bolt out of the body end of the panhard rod on the rear axle
2) disconnect rubber brake line and park brake cable (now would be a good time to replace that rear rubber line!)
3) disconnect shocks at the axle
4) jack the rear of the car up from the body (not the axle) until you can take the rear springs out (then take them out). Support the body with jack stands. Best location is just in front of the rear wheels.
5) take the two bolts loose holding the torque tube to the transmission
6) roll the axle back, pulling the torque tube from the trans. This may take chocking the front of one wheel then sitting in front of the opposite wheel and pushing back with your feet (chock prevents other wheel from moving forward) to get the slip yoke off.
7) Loosen all lug nuts, then put a floor jack under the center of the rear axle from the back of the car. Jack up and take tires off, then let axle down and pull to the rear. In this case just pull back until it's out of your way.
8) Now for the transmission! You want to support it first. You can use your floor jack without an adapter, but make sure you're near the front of the trans oil pan and have help! DO NOT put the small jack "head" directly on the oil pan! Get a piece of 1/2" or (preferably) 3/4" plywood just larger than the pan. That will spread the weight to the vertical edges of the pan and prevent damage. If the plywood extends forward to touch the bell that's even better!
9) remove the lower cover in front of the bell housing. Rotate the engine by hand and take all the torque converter bolts out from the front. Don't forget to unhook the speedo cable and throttle cable or modulator vacuum line.
10) On your car you will need to support the rear of the engine. You can do it from below with a jack stand, but it's easiest to raise the hood, throw a 2x4 acroos it with padding on each fender, and support from the top with a chain or good rope (remember though, a rope will stretch some!)
11) remove the rear crossmember under the bell housing. Be careful -- the rear of the trans and engine will lower some, especially if rope was used to support the engine! The floor jack under the trans should support everything for now with no problem.
12) Now remove the bell housing to engine bolts. Start with the upper ones. You may need to raise the jack under the trans some to get clearance.
13) once all bell to engine bolts are removed you will need a helper under the car with you. Lower the rear of the trans and engine (loosen the chain if necessary) a bit. The yoke should pull off the torque tube driveshaft and can be left in the trans to prevent leaks. You will have to push the trans back and steady it on the jack. This is where you need to be careful and have the trans centered on the jack (weight wise). Pull the torque converter with the trans. If you don't fluid will pour out the front.
14) once the trans is pulled back lower the jack. Now if you don't have room to pull the trans out you can pull the torque converter off (tilt the trans back just a little, and that converter will be heavy!) then remove the bell housing. That will get you another 6" of clearance.

Put it back in in reverse order. The first thign to do when reinstalling is to make sure the converter is seated in the front of the trans. Then keep it pushed back on the trans while installing.
