Re: FW: Jeep 4.0 in an American?

Do it.
My recomendation for a donor would be to search for a 91-95 Cherokee with moderate mileage. Anything under 80,000 miles will get you a good life span if it has been maintained and you can usually get an idea by looking the vehicle over good. remember these drivetrains run 200,000 miles plus with minimal maintenance.
I'd look for a rollover or rear hit 2wd automatic is easiest swap.
You can sell the front clip and recoop a fair amount of your money. Things you will need in addition to the donor vehicle.
A 232 crossmember and mounts from a 65 up small car, American Hornet, Gremlin with a 232 or 258. you can also make spacers like Frank did to mount the 4.0L to the Flathead crossmember if you wish. You will also need the 258 car oil pan and pickup
232 won't bolt up holes are wrong. 71 258 pan won't work because of not being dimpled for starter clearance since it had a drivers mount starter. 4.0L pan will hit EVERYTHING it is too deep. Ask me how I know! Ask Frank How he Knows! Don't mak our misstake and think it will be O.K. Unless you have a nose in the air drag car, it won't be O.K. Nuff said on that matter!
Use Jeeps serpentine accesories. If an AW4 is the same length as a T-5 I used a 76 Pinto S/W driveshaft. It was a bolt in! Even used the same U Joints! as the American! That brigns you to the rear axle. You will need to either swap it to later American axle or cut the driveshaft. The bignut it will have is not going to use the aforementioned Pinto driveshaft. I'd try and find a 66-69 raer axle with 3:08 or 3:31 Gears.
Don't bother too much witht he bulkhead connector tip Frank Gave you as it doesn't work quite as well with the HO system used in 91-95 a full wiring chart is best.
More questions? Ask! Been there done that! Still haven't got the T-shirt!
