I have always modified my AMC's using as many AMC parts as possible but from many different years and models. My newest car will stray from this somewhat as I didn't even get a core motor with it unless you count the 460 Ford engine currently resting in the engine compartment. While I will never use a Ford engine in an AMC, I do use Ford parts were needed such as rear ends and I currently have a real nice Mustang rear spoiler I will be modifieng to put on my 72 Javelin. I saved this car from the crusher recently(the New Mexico crusher Javelin) and it has a real nice body but not much else. I was planning a 401 with edlebrock heads, fuel injection, overdrive trans as well as many other modern upgrades. After adding up the cost of getting the parts to start on a new motor, I am leaning toward a 5.7 Hemi motor and auto overdrive. This will solve my fuel injection wants also. I have been pricing Hemi takeouts and it seems feasable. The Hemi has a rear sump, unlike the 460 I now ! have, and many other features I want. Since AMC was taken over by Chrysler, it's technically still in the family, just like putting a 401 in a Nash. I have been doing some research and so far the Hemi is winning. The 72 was only a 304 SST car so I am not worried about hurting the value, and was only $500. If it had been a 401 AMX I would not be taking this route.
