Check with the local shops. $1500 is about right for a remanufactured engine with warranty. Locals shoud be able to do it for about the same, maybe a bit less. People telling you about $800 rebuilds are doing most of the disassembly/assembly work themselves, and the engine needs (or gets!) little machine work. The only real advantage of a local shop doing the work is you know exactly who to talk to if there are problems. Some local shops are more protective of their reputation and will try to help more than others, ask around! Remember, you get what you pay for! A cheap rebuild will likely scrimp in some areas and will be less likely to help if you have problems. One more thing, make sure that's a LONG BLOCK (has heads) and not a SHORT BLOCK (no heads) you're getting for $1500! None of the "factory" remnas will have things like manifolds, oil pan, valve covers, and maybe not even a balancer. Should have oil pump and timing set and cover, but no fuel pump.
