Jay, it should idle around 700 rpm in drive. If the idle is to low in drive you'll get the results you have now. My 4.6L EFI six requires 650-700 rpm to idle smooth in drive. The stick shift computer I'm using wants to idle it at 600 rpm. The engine is rough and "lopey" at that speed though. I have a vacuum gauge, and it's all over the place at the 600 rpm idle. If I rest my foot on the gas and get the idle up to 650-700 the vac gauge settles down along with the smoothness of the engine.
