Tom, I think an aluminum spray paint should look fine on the headlight doors. Will have a bit of a matte finish, but maybe dull the grille with a scotchbrite pad then spray on some clear. But what's that on top of the intake -- an old Carter YF single barrel carb with an adapter???? You have to be kidding! Get one of the Motorcraft two stage 2V carbs from an old Pinto or almost any early 80s Ford 2.3L. It will flow enough, though will need rejetting. For those who don't believe a 2.3L four carb will flow enough air for a 4.2L six, remember that the four turns at much higher rpm than the six, therefore it has to flow a good bit of air. The two stage carb should flow at least as much as a Carter BBD 2V with both stages open, less than the YF with one open. Should deliver more power when needed and better idle/low speed economy. I imagine the second stage will open at every take-off and during every acceleration, but steady cruising should be more economical. City mileage will probably be about the same as the YF single but you'll be taking off a bit quicker as well ;> The only thing better would be a 2-4 adapter and one of the little 350 Holley 4V carbs (I think they make one that small -- 450 might be smallest). The 450 has ben known to work okay with an adapter as well -- that stock manifold has a decent size plenum, and the secondaries don't open up very often and seldom all the way. The 2V Motorcraft carb from a 304 will work, flows about 500 cfm (which is really the limit for the 258). Only problem is it's not a two stage carb and economy would drop as well as a bit of low end torque due to the size of the venturis (smaller venturis = better low end torque, which is why IHC used 2Vs on their version of the AMC 401 and why 4V carbs are a necessity -- you probably knew this Tom, posted for benefit of those who don't).
