Dodge started using the K-car inspired 2.5L right after the Mitsu 2.6L. Shortly after the Jeep takeover (88 or 89) they stuck the AMC/Jeep 2.5L in Dakotas as it was better suited for truck duty than the Chrysler engine. More torque at lower rpms. Looks like it was used through 2003 as the standard Dakota engine (some websites list 2002 as last year), went to the 3.7L V-6 as standard engine after that.
