RWD/4X4 L6 4.0L 32RH A999
Tom - the above is the Data I gleaned
off www.google.com .
The A-999 is :
RWD = Rear Wheel Drive
4X4 = comes with a transfer case
This is a non-electric trans. as
it doesn't have an 'E', say 32RE -
instead it has the H being Hydraulic
operation.
The thing here is you can have an A-999
and if you want the 2WD only - have your
Trans. Man - swap the tailshaft from a
2wd 904.
The A-999 of newer vintage is a much
refined item over the old 904s and comes
with HD parts whereas the 904 is very
light weight.
Builders who beef the 904 - use the 999
internals - but their results having a weaker case as
the A-999 case, which is cast with extra bracing
and webbing is a better way to go.
As to purchasing from one of the www.car-parts.com
yards - , Wranglers have a tendency to roll over and
perform badly in emergency road manuvers, leading
to crashes. In one Rhode Island yard, the majority
of their JEEP stock are wrecks involving tip overs
and roll overs.........
That said, there is a goodly stock of A-999 transmissions
with low mileage on them - just do the contacting and
speak with the yard. Many of the yards have been
with www.car-parts.com for years - so ask about
any 90 day etc. return policies up front.

I've become wary of interchanges outside my area of personal
experience; I just don't have the data nor experience to know what
fits, nor the time or money to try-and-see with big parts like
transmissions.
I know I sound stupid, but I honestly don't know what "late model
wrangler" means. Can you give an example year? New enough to
have
"low" mileage, say 50,000 or less, means it's got to be < 10
years
old. That's 1995. Aren't those riddled with computers and smog
interlocks and lockup converters that want interface to other
systems?
If it's old enough to be non-electronic, eg. 1980's, then it's likely
got a lot of miles.
