Re: 904 vs 727

Gary, the 727 was the best automatic transmission of its day. If it was good enough for Hemis and 440s, not to mention all Chrysler high performance engines from 1956 on (iron case used until '62 when it became the 727), it should certainly be able to handle anything the 401 can put through it. Part of the benefits of having such a transmission is its durability. You don't want to have to install more than one transmission....

The 904 was a stripped-down TF for low-power use. Compare the TH400 with a TH250. It's the same idea. It can probably be built to handle 375 hp, but for how long? A good used 727 from a retired C body Mopar - without any buildup would probably be better and its doubtful if 'rotating mass' will make any measurable difference to your times or your wallet.

Well it's time for me to address the tranny issue in my 73 AMX w/401. I have
heard some negatives on the 727, i.e. heavy, rotating mass etc. The tranny I
choose will be reworked a bit to handle some extra horsepower. I thought
about the full manual valve body, but this will be an occasionally street
driven car with a handful of weekends up at Lebanon Valley Drag. Can the 904
be built up to handle the approx. 375 horsepower the builder is predicting?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
