Bruce's claim that nitriding crankshafts can warp them is news to me. Mind, I'm not a machinist but I have hung around light plane maintenance shops (FBOs) for way too many hours and I can't remember that ever being mentioned. Of course, lots of things were never mentioned. Anyway there's a good summary of heat treating processes at this link:
