A: Looking back on the time and money I wasted on my '66 Fairlanes (1 was
stolen and the other was too far gone for me to fix the body easily, but I
dumped a chunk of money into it) I wish I had just bought my neighbor's '79
Concord and stuffed a 304 into it with the 4 speed from the Granada I had in
my Fairlane (4th gear was overdrive)

why not a stock hd 304/t150 clutch?
you might want to check it over when you pick it up; iirc the
replacement pp will be 10.5" but the disk will be only 10", as was the
original pp iirc. that being the case, you might want to get a 10.5"
ford disc, say for a 302 - the t150 is a 3sp ford toploader tranny and
has a ford-common 1 1/16" x 10 spline input.
you might also want to be on the lookout for a toploader 4sp, esp. if
you already have a floor shifter. you'll need a new shifter, but the
common short-mainshaft versions will slip right into the 3sp's place.
same length, splines, bolt pattern, etc. -maybe- the rear mount is
different. wide ratios - most common - start with 2.78:1 first.

for those of us who want a hd clutch for our pre-'72 199/232/258,
perfection has the only hd pp which is still actually 10" - their
c1647 for b&b style, c1897 for diaphragm style, rcf448 15/16" x 10
spline disk. a 10.5" b&b will bolt up to the flywheel, but will -not-
clear the bellhousing. ask me how i know...
pedal travel is longer than the 9 1/8", and freeplay is tricky until
the clutch wears in a bit. effort is about the same.
iirc the 196 flywheel is not drilled for the 10"/10.5" pp pattern. my
'66 199 and afaik all 199/232/258 were.
diaphragm types are lower in profile than b&b types; perhaps a 10.5"
dia -would- clear the bell, but iirc don't they tend to have even
longer pedal travels?
