Dan, the 390 should work, look at the crankshaft it should have a flat face,
if it does the 727 flywheel should fit it. One other thing you can use the
71 and earlier crankshafts with the 904 and 727 flywheels, but you cannot
use the 72 and later crankshafts with the Borg Warner flywheels, or BW
transmissions with out reworking the crankshaft end (or making the BW
flywheels fit the crankshaft). 72 and newer crankshafts have a raised ring
that the flywheels rest on.
I'm running a 904 that came out of a 74-258, behind a early 71-360, it
hasten broke yet..........

I've got the 390 sitting on the engine stand for my '69 AMX and the body
won't be ready for probably another year. The engine has been done for a
couple of years and I've rotated it, kept it oiled and ready for use. Today
I was thinking, why not drop it in the Spirit.....all I need to do is get a
couple of questions answered. One, what mods do I need to do to the crank
to bolt up a 727 or 904 transmission, and two, would the trans in the spirit
(behind the 258) bolt up to the 390 or do I need a V8 transmission.
I understand the swap mods that will be required to drop in the V8, just not
sure about the tranny options. I don't want to run a B-W as the parts and
strength are limited to build one.
Thanks for any information that can help.
