Garry, I do it one of three ways;
1. First, I always keep all the AMC keys I find, I try each one in the
locks, I jiggle each one as I try to turn it to see if I get one to turn the
lock, once it turns don't turn it back it may not work again.
2. If I'm only moving it a little to line it up with a trailer I remove the
two bolts at the gear input shaft and slide the shaft up towards the dash
out of the way, then push on the front wheels to line them up as you move
the vehicle.
3. Third way is to have a Steering Wheel Puller and Steering Wheel lock
Plate Tool. First remove the Horn Button or Cap, then remove the Steering
Wheel Nut, next use a Steering Wheel Puller to remove the steering wheel
"Don't hammer on the SHAFT to remove the wheel". Next use the Steering
Wheel lock Plate Tool to compress the Steering Wheel locking Plate enough to
remove the retaining clip/snap-ring, now pull off the locking plate.
Caution also remove the horn spring button under the plate before placing
the Steering Wheel back on or the horn spring button will brake when the
wheel is turned. This doesn't take long if you have the two tools to do it
with, any auto parts store has both the tools.
