Re: 1977 Hornet Brakes

Yes, AVOID!!!!!! those 77 brakes. I know, I owned a 77 Hornet AMX when
it was new. At 6 months old, one of the plastic pistons siezed in the
caliper which ruined the rotor. The car was new and it sat for over 6
weeks waiting on a rotor. No dealer in the country had one. I searched
every manufacturer I could in Texas, no rotor. Finally my folks, out on
trip in their RV located one at a NAPA store in BFE, USA. At that time
the expensive rotor was $154.00. Very expensive for 1977 for a
replacement rotor.

But, be fdorwarned, 1977 Hornet is not the only AMC that got stuck with
these ''different'' brakes than ANY other AMC has. All the Small cars of
1977 got them. This means Gremlins too. And in the first part of 1988,
The small cars got them again, this includes Concord. Somewhere in 1978
the Bad brakes went away. The ones on my Hornet were sliders as well,
but not the Ford versions I am used to.

Don't overlook Pacer brakes. They will bolt on our other AMCs with no
problem. We put a set on my Rebel Machine.

Randy Guynn
