Marty, what Randy means by "2 & 3 series carriers" is 2.xx gear ratioss (2 series) and 3.xx (3 series) gear ratios. Two different size carriers for the same rear axle. AMC made two axles -- the Model 20 (AMC 20) with a 8-7/8" ring gear and the model Model 15 (AMC 15) with 7-9/16" ring gear. You are correct in stating that some ratios are available in one and not the other. That is due to the size of the ring gear (outside diameter, the measurements listed above). You can get more teeth on a larger diameter gear. Randy explained the reasons for the different ratios and "size" carriers very well, re-read his post if you need to. Some aftermarket gears are indeed made to fit the stock carrier. If the Richmond Gear website doesn't specify that a new carrier is needed it *should* be safe to assume it will fit the stock carrier. It is possible, hoever, to get the ratio in a different way (Randy gave a good example). -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) -------------- Original message ---------------------- > Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2005 20:04:35 -0800 (PST) > From: Marty Bricker <mbrickerusn@xxxxxxxxx> > Subject: AMC Model 20 rear end parts swap discussion part 99 > To: AMC List <mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > > Randy, > I was the one who resurrected the model 20 rear end > discussion but I'm still not entirely clear on how it > all works.
