Edelbrock EFI info

A lot of folks have been asking the exact same question about the new
EFI from Edelbrock. That is, ''How is it working?'' Well, so far of the
units sold I guess no one has a vehicle up and running . To be honest
more Jeepers are asking than AMC Car guys.
I have learned a few things since the units have been released. When you
order one of these units you must provide real vehicle info to them
because they burn the chip for the computer from the parts you have,
gear ratio, vehicle weight. So there is a big difference between the set
up for a stock 304 CJ7, and a big cammed , high compression, street
flogger. There are a few things to understand here about how the
sysatem works.
First you get the chip burned, then you will run that set up, and tune
with the hand held device they provide with the kit. If you do not get
satisfactory performance/mileage, then you will need to get Edelbrock to
burn another chip. There is only so much tuning leeway built into the
hand held device. also, burning more chips is just one of the things you
must do at times with this type of kit. If you run a Howell or Turbo
City set up you have to deal with Chip Burning as well.
I have a customer with decent built 401 in his Turbo City equipped CJ.
He is on his 3rd chip. First one was O.K., 2nd one was better, this one
seems good, but he thinks there is more to be had with another burn. He
has been tweeking on his for about two hunting seasons now.
The only EFI systems that don't require chip burning is the Lap Top
Programable tyle such as from Indy Cylinder Heads, or Accells,DFI units.
There are others as well, F.A.S.T., comes to mind, and Electromotive.
The lap top type units come with the software program to tune the fuel &
ignition and this is a big part of the extra costs between the types of
units. A unit that is tunable without burning chips is a lot better
deal, but just be prepared for an extra $1000.00 or so over the
Edelbrock type.
Just thought I would pass along that the Edelbrock unit is not just one
of those units that you grab off the shelf and drop on. You must first
provide the real info on your ride. Fudge here and you are just begging
to have tuning issues. The Chevy & Ford guys have had these systems from
Edelbrock for years and they seem to run just great, no reason the AMCs
should not run just fine as well.
