Re: {FORGED?} 5 MPH Bumper Question

I've seen one or two with the bumpers moved in. You eliminate the cushioning effect, but the owners took two flat plates and drilled to fit the cylinder mounts and welded a piece of pipe between them. The bumper itself is pretty sturdy on the 70s cars. The ones on the early 60s are little more than decoration. I rolled my car into a 1.5" diameter bush and it bent the bumper in the middle! The car (63 Classic) couldn't have been going even 2 MPH -- I was pushing it!!

I plan on tucking the bumpers on the orange Hornet closer to the body. The front ones are pistons and I plan on elongating the mounting bracket holes to move the bumper closer to the body. The rears don't appear to be pistons but just tubes. Is there a spring or some kind of rebound mechanism inside the tube? I figured I could shorten the tube a few inches to tuck in the rear bumper.
