Re: Rusted Rear Brake Drum...removal tips

Ok, two points...have you backed off the brakes
themselves with the adjuster in the back? If not, the
brake pads dragging across the drum ( and the fact
that there is probably a ridge in the back lip, so the
brake shoes catch it ), contributes to it not budging
easily. Try to back them off as much as possible
first.
The second area is the axle hub center, where the
brake drum slips over it to center it. It gets really
rusty, and the drum can't slip by the expanded rust.
Take a wire wheel brush in your drill, or a hand wire
brush, and clean off the center axle hub area around
the circular lip as much as feasible. These two items
should help, if not, lots of banging and cursing will
be required to remove the drum. I've done my share,
and doing these two things will help with removal,
even if not a full cure for brute force. Some
judicious filing of the center hole in the brake drum
with minimal removal of metal before reassembly should
help the next time, too.
