if its just surface rust I find that WD-40,scotchbrite metal conditioning pads (or the scrubbing pads for dishes even work)and a little elbow grease will take it right off

I do this quite often as I am a machinist and parts that sit overnight or over the weekend often have some amount of surface rust.
