Re: Removing surface rust from machined parts?

Greg,

I tried replying to this message earlier today and got unsubscribed from the list. So I changed the title of your message slightly because I thought maybe the server didn't like the word "remove" in your original title.

Anyway, I think bead blasting (with glass beads) is OK if you are careful to cover any machined bearing surfaces. You'll want to thoroughly clean the parts of blasting debris afterward of course. I have a radial aircraft engine with a tapered crankshaft nose designed for a tapered prop hub. I have cleaned rust from this part of the crankshaft with fine crocus cloth and light oil.

Subject: Best way to remove surface rust from machined parts?

Hi everyone,
I want to clean up some engine parts, over Christmas break, which have a mild
amount of surface rust on some machined areas. I was thinking about either
having the parts tumbled or getting some glass bead and blasting them at home.

I'd like to hear from those experienced with this, as to what is the best
method to do this and maintain the integrity of the machined surfaces.

Thanks for the responses!

P.S. If you would, when responding to the LIST, please CC your email to me at
