Yep, it's that time of the week again Primary Subject: FLYWHEELS Secondary Subject and what I need help with: STARTER RING GEAR REMOVE & REPLACE OK, OK, It was easy to remove the old one I just beat the puppy off with a hammer and punch. I rapped it a bit here and a bit there and pretty soon the thing fell off. Man I don't grasp how it could have done anything but miss bite the starter bendix drive for at least the last 20,000 miles. It's just flat amazing to what level some stuff can be abused and still function. So then I got a new one from NAPA for less than $27. I noticed it's not a one piece unit, it's made from a piece of rectangular stock with the teeth cut and then it was rolled and a butt forge type weld was done to make it continuous. Should I just beat it on like I beat the other one off? Or should I freeze the flywheel and heat the starter ring gear to about 200 degrees and then beat it on quick? Any one had experience? Good? Bad? Please let me know, Thanks, Armand (first timer at replacing starter ring gear)
