BACKFIRE often sprays flaming gasoline in your face and makes a sharp terrifying noise. MISFIRE goes put put put TUH put put TUH TUH put put... where TUH is the engine stumbling when a cylinder doesn't fire. If it's really regular it's usually one cylinder with a bad wire, plug, etc.
