I forgot to mention.. its backfiring thru the exhaust, not out the carb.

Brian,

Backfiring (through the carb) when accelerating is a
sign of a lean mixture.  Try richening the mixture and
check for vacuum leaks (carb base, intake manifold
leak, etc.).
