Re: Mooing Rambler - BACKFIRING - timing chain wear check...

Jim, Jerry, and everyone else,

It is backfiring at idle. No gas. In other words, i turn the car over, it idles, and backfires continually. (not every second, but putt putt pop putt putt pop pop putt putt...etc)

One thing I noticed.. I can turn the fan by hand easily without turning the engine (the belt slips). I also noticed while it was running at idle that if i watched the front crank bolt (where you turn the engine by hand) it seems to wobble a little, or at least im seeing vibration.

Give any clues?

A: When you apply the throttle it backfires? or when you back off after
revving? If after revving, then you have a leak someplace.

I forgot to mention.. its backfiring thru the
exhaust, not out the carb.

Brian, have you checked the timing chain for wear?
