The availability was 1975-6, to the best of my knowledge, though it 
might have been added late in MY 74.  It was also available in the 
Pacer, column shift only.  It's a nice setup, and should fit your 
Hornet.  The tailshaft seal is unique and no longer available, though 
I found a single lip seal that fit.  I expect I'll have to replace it 
sooner or later.

The yoke is unique to the overdrive unit in AMC application, but 
suitable replacements are still available from Spicer.  The 
transmission mount is unique to the OD application, but Volvo used 
the same overdrive unit (GKN/Laycock-de Normanville J-type) and 
something for a 124 with OD might work.

Control wiring can be as simple as a toggle switch, as the engagement 
is done with a solenoid valve that diverts gear oil to apply a 
hydraulic clutch, much like an automatic transmission.  The factory 
used a third gear lockout, a speed sensor on the speedometer drive, 
and a WOT kickdown switch on the throttle.  I have an aftermarket 
carb and my speed sensor is bad, so I manually engage it with the 
button on the turn signal stalk.
