Really, what's wrong???) Gone, but [sometimes not] forgotten. Latest "forward-look" (to make an "Ex"-ample of how "Avanti" American need be to not lose both pants -and- shirts over the next 20 years; GM must aim more than its Saturn into the Sky) in-print "ugly" list doesn't have a single AMC. Good? No Gremlin and Pacer jokes. Bad? Not "What's at Matador?" --- but "What's an American Motors?" Best American showing (3 of 7) on 1/05 SCC "Ugly" Top Ten was Mer-par! Yadda to: #7 SRT-4 #6 SSR #5 Aztek #4 Magnum #3 300C #2 Aveo #1 xB Online Brit lists lack for AMC also http://www.uglycars.co.uk/uglylist.asp http://www.channel4.com/4car/feature/topten/ugliest-cars/ugliest-cars.html olde curiosity shop has no inventory http://maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=ugly_cars shortlist relates AMC to past glories http://www.uglycars.fws1.com/photo2.html and [un-AMC] tastes will usually vary http://www.the-diner.net/LEFTOVERS/LO-9UglyCars.htm (no AM means more Pontiac excitement) but if AMC's ride now parallels the Hudson http://www.part.to/images-krazy/hudson2b.jpg (it's still on river road, not in river bed) while some models could someday swim alone, http://www.camera-crafts.com/Dc4x0367-D6.jpg (Can you name that American marque today?) AMC still drives with Enzo. A good place to be. http://pez.multiply.com/photos/album/23 I'm not sure where history will place them, but I drove new V-6 and GT icons of an AM-era American Dream recently and found both -better- than expected: value beyond their styling; quality beyond their reputations. One was almost Japanese in sound and smoothness; the other, despite (or because of?) its semi-modern MacP/3-link live rear footing, handled as well as some Europeans. Despite its bit-too-loud vocal notes (Pontiac people could soon be seen in Fords), bit-too-funereal interior (Mercedes sees the light upholstery with satin metallic glow of sales), bit-too-late-developing torque curve (4.6 isn't 5.0, obviously), it is a better conceived, better assembled and better looking car than the better part of post-glory-days (that's post-1933, post-1956 or post-1971, depending on whose glory you sing your praises to) American automobiles. I'm sure it's not the "Best Ever" as this month's magazine covers scream (How can they forget the GT 500-KR, Boss 302 and even '86 SVO?), but it makes a nice 2005 Javelin SST, I'll admit. It also becomes very much less "ugly" the closer --- and harder --- we look at it: something else that all classic American automobiles did. Did very well. But while "Donohue ducktail" doesn't detract http://www.classicdesignconcepts.com/catalog/itemdisplay/630.html its side windows don't need cover-ups at all! http://www.classicdesignconcepts.com/catalog/itemdisplay/629.html Finally, while American cars try (and succeed) at becoming more world-wise, the world squeals in delight trying to become more Americanized. Yipee! <http://195.241.75.99/kladblog/image/200409/dukes.wmv> "Daisy, Daisy... I'm half crazy... But you'll look sweet upon the seat Of a bicycle built for two!" (And remember the first Ramblers...)
