I'm not an expert but I have looked under a lot of junkyard hoods the last few years. AMC 258 was used in Scouts (and maybe pickups, but I doubt it) in the 70s and early 80s. AMC 401 was used in anything BUT Scouts in the 70s. The IHC engines are much more common (304, 345 and 392) as you would expect. IH V8s all have the word "international" stamped into their valve covers. If the valve covers are missing, I think the IH distributor is located on the back of the engine. At any rate it is not canted to one side in the front like the AMC engine.
