John, this should be reported to Ebay. It's very
probable it IS an attempt to get more money for the
item by false bidders. If the email you got ( from the
seller) has a date/time stamp ONLY 4 hours after the
end, it should be obvious to anyone ( including EBay
itself ) that the other bidder was faked. After 1-2
days, or a week...maybe. 4 HOURS???? Highly doubtful.
I think even Ebay has a FAQ on this sort of deceptive
selling. Of course, reporting it may not win you any
favors with the seller, and you may not get any
emblems from them if they relist and you try to bid.
Personally, I'd send an Email back and "respectively"
decline, telling them you'll wait til they relist it.
:)
With Ebay, you need to learn that even if there are
people taking advantage of the system, DON'T fall into
their trap because you "have" to have the item(s).
Just be sensible and back off if it seems to
ridiculous, like you did. Other items will eventually
come up. Like another guy said, bid what you think
it's worth to YOU, and you can't get burned. You may
pay more than if no one else bids at all,but you won't
lose in the long run. Good luck on this one, John.
On a side note...I DID once get contacted by a
winning BIDDER a few months after the item had
sold...he said he couldn't get it back to his state,
did I want it for the price he paid? ( The item was
only 2 hours away from me, I went and looked at it
before I bid on it originally ). I agreed to take it
at his price, and went and got .... a sunroof '72
Gremlin, that is still parked in my driveway. :) It
was only $25 more than I bid, and the car was close to
me, so it wasn't a problem. The other guy couldn't
drive it back to Rhode Island, turned out the left
front caliper was sticking badly. I ground-towed it
home with no problems, though. But I was dealing with
an AMC person, so there wasn't any problem. LOL. It
was an off-Ebay side deal, anyway, nothing suspicious
about it, the buyer had paid for it , and I agreed to
pay the bidder for it thru the mail. He sent me the
title, and I went and picked up the Gremlin. That was
the only thing that had me worried, I was sending
money to a person off Ebay on trust, but it worked
out. Maybe one day that Gremlin will even be seen on
the road.
