When you crank it, the positive battery cable doesn't happen to get warm (or hot), does it? If the cables get warm (or hot), they're bad for sure. I had that happen to me once on one of my Valiants. If you have room to do it safely, try connecting the jumper cables directly to the starter. If it starts right up, it may just be bad cables.
