The multi-port fuel injection MPI was required for californian cars or states that required cal emmissions. It could be ordered in other states, if I recall. The TBI was put into all others. The 1.7 MPI came out in 85 due to the introduction of the convertible. The added weight of the convertible required more power, and was welcome on the other models as an option, over the 1.4. Downfall of the 1.7 was that it needed to have timing belt changed at 90k IF I recall, or the engine would self destruct. It was a nice motor, was peppy and quiet. The 1.4 needed frequent head bolt and gasket adjustments, and god forbid if it ran low on oil or coolant. But with good maintenance it was a preety good motor, great on fule economy but underpowered with the auto trans. I have that in my 83 4 dr Alliance limited. The 1.7 OHC was an interferance motor. The 2.0 liter came out with the GTA in 86/87. An even better performing engine. I don't think Cal emiisions had anything to do with not bri! nging out the Turbo r-11. I never even recall a discsusson on it. If they were considering it, it was probably shelved due to: poor renault quality, poor quality control, cost, and poor sales, poor profits, and other more pressing sales issues. If I recall, There was a special model alliance that could be ordered for drop shipping to performance shops for sport car club racing programs, but not sure if many were ordered or any details. Just sort of came to my mind. I may look up and see if i have any info on that in my files. They were seriously considering bringing out the ALPINE, and we had done special focus groups, clinics and a special direct mail program for interested purchase intenders. It got shelved as Renault sales declined and Renault sold out to the Mopar boys, and stole the company from the stockholders and employees. "Get to tow, get to know Renault..........
