What I did was buy a universal sending unit with the right ohm range (I think it's Ford) that was adjustable. I took the actual unit off the mount. The mount consisted of a round piece that goes in top of the tank and a long slotted bar. The unit slid up and down the bar by using two screws. I thne disassembled an original unit. I simply pried the cover off the movement and gutted it. I left the cover off, leaving a flat plate brazed to the pickup tube. The two screws on the universal unit were used to mount it to the original plate. One of the screws slipped right in a slot that was for the original arm, the other I put a washer on and used it like a clamp right over the top edge of the plate. It took some creative bending of the float arm to get it reading right, but it works great. 

Mark, in your case I'd cut the original 5/16" feed line right below that plate and use it for a return line. Then drill a hole and braze or epoxy in a bigger pickup line. I don't think having the return line submerged when you have 1/2 tank+ will be a problem with the 30+ psi in the line (the EFI runs at 35-39 psi). If you think it might, plug the original line on the outside of the tank but keep it in place to use the mounting plate. Then you can drill a return line beside it just like the feed line. Otherwise you'll have to weld/braze/epoxy a plate on your new feed line to mount the sending unit. I don't know how well epoxy would hold up totally submerged in gasoline.
