Those are all good things to do, but I would check for vacuum leaks (check to see that the carb if bolted down snugly, but not gorilla tight).  If you have a dirty fuel tank, your problems might continue until you remove and clean it.  

  Also you could have some dirt or varnish in the carburetor. the failure to idle sounds like it the idle jet or passage could be plugged.  I would first remove the idle mixture needle and shoot some carb cleaner in that passage, then replace the needle and adjust the idle mixture properly.  If that doesn't work, the next step might be to disassemble and clean the carburetor.  You probably have either a Holley 1904 or a Carter AS.   If you have an AS, you have my sympathy because they always tend to flood when I put them back together.  The build kits (which have the gaskets you need and a new needle and seat and accelerator pump) are available from the antique carburetor vendors.  Good luck.
