I'm still working on the 1981 AMC Spirit 6 cyl and the air intake trapdoor vacuum motor. This is a *California* 1981 AMC Spirit with full air quality control equipment. I want a *new* replacement. Since the exact part isn't available so I'm looking for a close / usable replacement (or something usable). The Rockauto online catalog (rockauto.com) allows selection without a specific automobile or part in mind. I used the selected part number search and specified "emission" and "vacuum motor" (leaving the other search fields alone). This brings up a list of vacuum motors, some of which have pictures. Looking at the pictures they all look a lot like the AMC vacuum motor with some differences in the length of wire/actuator arm and the position of tube vacuum connection relative to mounting bracket. There's no scale for the picture so there isn't a guide to the actual size of the vacuum motor. Also, and more importantly there is no specification for the strength of the internal spring which controls how much vacuum it takes to pull in the vacuum motor. I ordered three different vacuum motors, this was a gamble with minimal information (and some suggestions from this list). Since I didn't care which automobile the vacuum motor "fit" I chose low priced closeouts which looked promising: VA8, VA19, FE702. These were about $6.00 each and together with shipping made an order of about $26. Upon testing the VA8 clearly had too strong of an internal spring so it could never work as is. I opened it and it's diaphragm fits the original AMC vacuum motor case. My current plan is to reassemble the new VA8 diaphragm in the original AMC vacuum motor case and with the original AMC vacuum motor spring. Of course, during the reassembly I can align the mounting bracket, diaphragm lever plane, and vacuum tube connection to match the original AMC alignment. The big unknown is how to connect/adapt the linkage on the VA8 diaphragm to pull on the AMC trapdoor lever. The pivot at the connection between the linkage and the diaphragm might be important. Any suggestions? Comments? PS: More information and pictures at http://amcgqr.comyr.com/ Thank you... -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Email service worth paying for.
