" " There might be a better solution -- an adapter plate for the T-5 bell
" " housing. A Jeep T-5 bell housing is relatively easy to find. All the
" " 77-88 or so six bells should be multi-pattern and capable of mounting
" " a T-5, some of the other holes may not be tapped but should be drilled.
"
" the other primary pattern on these bells is the wide ford toploader
" rectangle, used by amc/jeep for the t150 and t176/7/8, tremec-made
" toploaders. the t150 even has ford splines in and out and a ford
" pilot.
"
" these multipattern bells were used with v8s, 304s and even 360s iirc.
"
" --------------------------
"
" So you basically state the comment I was going to make -- the AMC bell
" is likely heavier than the Ford Mustang because it was designed to be
" used in heavier duty applications, namely Jeep off-road. I don't have

and in fsj also. that's where you'd find them behind 360s, if
anywhere.

" a Mustang bell handy to verify this, but I haven't heard of Jeepers
" having problems with the bells. If anyone would be breaking them it
" would be them! Some use 360s and 401s with low gearing and snatch them
" around on the rocks.

yes, for the multipattern bells. the earlier single-pattern sr4 bell
was designed for the 258 and afaik only used in cars.

yes, there were single-pattern sr4 bells - my '65 hotrod project
american had one. it did not have any place to drill for the wide
ford t150/t176 pattern. i don't have facts but i believe the sr4 and
t150 bells weren't combined into a single multipattern one until about
'80.

and iirc my mustang informant wasn't breaking bellhousings, he was
having tranny or clutch problems because of bellhousing flexure.
jeepers who weren't racing might have the same problems and not
notice.

"
" On the fitment - I'm confused. I see where there is an adapter plate
" that some use - but I'd thought GM input length is ~6-7/8" and OEM
" manuals on AMCs were that if T10 or more if going to the Ford T-type
" trans. More digging...
" ------------------
"
" Only the AMC V-8 transmissions prior to 1979 have the long input

'74, the warner t-10 and 3sp t-15, t-14 [in jeeps], t-86 and t-89
pre-'68. the '75-9 tremec t150 input is more on the short side.

" shaft. I'm not sure about Jeeps, just talking cars now! The only
" manual used in cars from 79 on behind a V-8 was the SR4. The only

and by '79, in cars the only v8 was a 2bbl 304. fsjs had just dropped
the 401, were still using 360s.

" other trans used was a 998 (no 360 in 79). The 1972+ AMC six bell is
" strong enough to be used in Jeeps, and it is 6-5/8" deep. Everyone
" uses the six cylinder bell (specifically 77-83) for T-5 (and other
" trans) conversions -- NOT the T-10 or V-8 three speed bell.

there is more than one '72-up six bell. the only 3sp '72-4 was the
t14; the t150 wasn't used until '75 and the sr4 even later.

note - for gen2 v8s there is only one deep stick bell; it has both
t-86/jeep t-14/t-15 and t-10 [and maybe t-89] patterns. the top 2
holes are shared. the t-89 pattern resembles the t-10 but i haven't
seen one in the flesh to see if they're identical; it was only used
with gen2 v8s in '67. the t-15, with the almost square t-86 pattern,
replaced it in '68. i don't know of any '67-only bell for gen2s.
