Yes, it will help with weight on the wheel. I suggest you put 2-3 2x4 blocks under the tire, but you can also put a floor jack under the control arm. This website might help some:

Gentlemen, I am installing new strut rod bushings on my 77 AMX and I am having a problem getting the bushings and cup to seat evenly with bracket in other words the metal cup is tilted and almost in contact with bracket. Car is on jack stands and am wondering if weight should be on the wheels any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
