[AMC-list] choke on Carter BBD 8302S on AMC 1981 Spirit 6 cyl 258

AMC 1981 Spirit 6 cyl 258 with Carter BBD 8302S carburetor

Many thanks for the help, in particular the part numbers and idle speed
adjustment service letter.

The carburetor seems tight to the intake manifold, no rocking.

I retested the "open" electric choke, this time it measured 4 ohms, not
open. When I saw this I applied bat+ via a 1 ohm resistor (so I could
watch the current via the voltage across this resistor). The current
when down to 1A in a few seconds and after a few minutes was .35A.
At this point the choke was visibly open.

A later test the next day showed the choke to ground resistance
infinite/open.

I retested the choke pull-off, it failed the same, doesn't hold vacuum
and no movement. No surprise here.

I tested the sol-vac and it's all OK. The sol-vac holds vacuum and
moves
with vacuum applied, it's coil measures 37 ohm and holds the sol-vac
position (against manually trying to move it) when current is applied
(.4A). The vacuum valve which supplies vacuum to the sol-vac measures
70 ohm, clicks when power applied, and does provide vacuum to sol-vac
(and sol-vac moves). No vacuum leak either, both the vacuum valve and
sol-vac hold vacuum in either state of the vacuum value.

new questions:

Is there some sort of switch inside of the electric choke which would
show
it as open or do I have a intermittent electric choke heating element?

There is only about 1/2 inch of access between the bottom left electric
choke screw and the air injection manifold pipe. Assuming I can't get
this screw out with a screwdriver, can I grind off the head of this
screw and then remove the remaining bit after the electric choke has
been removed?

The AMC manual talks about grinding off the electric choke holding screw
heads (assuming the break off screws were used) but it isn't clear to
me how the rest of the screw is to be removed once the choke is off.

What size/thread are these screws? (Hopefully some standard size?)

Thank you,

Michael
