Andrew has the main question. 
What are you looking to do? 
A drag car or even gently driven street car is fine with a factory box. 
Want a quick ratio? The first batch of AMX got a "fast" box. 
You can get one redone. 
With the adapter and a little web search you can get a S-10 or other manual 
box that quickens things up. 
Lowbuc? Use an adapter plate then fill a 93-98 ish Grand Cherokee with P/S fluid and a breather let and the breather breath 
no pump, just fill it and watch the breather for over flow till you find a fill point 
Note most people miss the missing mounting log on newer boxes so be sure you get the correct 
mounting lugs is critical. I bought the 93 Grand cherokee box for the American and found only three bosses 
on it. Of course that missing lug was not the same as the unused one....On the flip side...the box will be a perfect fit on the 65 Ambo. 
Note the 03-97 Jeep box will have about 3 turns lock to lock. Not the 2.5 or so of a GM box. The AMC/Jeep box has no stops in it. 
You want this. Not the short turning radius of the 2-2.5 GM box that limits your turning radius.

all amcs from '67 on had saginaw boxes. what's your reason? 

if you want to go power, the factory setup used an adapter plate that 
bolted to the chassis and had the saginaw ps pattern on it, but a 
chevy vega ps box has the old manual box bolt pattern and should go on 
directly. it's very popular with hot rodders for that reason, and as 
a result the supply is good.
